Bio
- Fifty years ago, the class of ’71 set a new record for IIT admissions when seven of us (Kurdukar, Deep Sagar, Jayanth, SR, Raghav Rao, Ananda, and me) headed off to Chennai, while others chose other institutes like Kanpur (Raghav Reddy & Nilotpal) and Mumbai (Vasu).
- After IIT, I tried pursuing engineering at Cornell, but came to realize that I was not cut out for it and switched to the business program, where I studied finance. This led me to a 40-year career working with Wall Street businesses, including 11 years working for Goldman Sachs in London.
- I retired for the first time as a partner after the IPO at age 48, but retirement didn’t suit me. I was bored, so after just one year of retirement,
- I started a hedge fund business and sold it to the private equity firm KKR. I stayed on as a partner managing KKR’s hedge fund business and retired three years ago for the second time.
- Instead of being bored on my second stint at retirement, I am keeping myself engaged and fulfilled by focusing on educational philanthropy. I have been a board member of ISB in Hyderabad for the last 20 years and am a trustee of Cornell University. I am also actively involved in the investment committees of the Wellcome Trust and the London School of Economics.
Family
- Along with educational philanthropy, I also take great pleasure in spending my time with my two kids and two grandkids, who also live in New York, and playing a lot of bridge and golf, though the scorecard does not reflect it.
- My family has been by my side throughout my journey.
- My wife Rasika, an artist, and I have been married for nearly 40 years. Until recently, both of our kids and their spouses were in finance. After Wall Street, my daughter restarted her career with a focus on environmental, social, and governance (ESG).
- She has become the moral conscience of our family, banning red meats and plastics for starters. It has been a challenge for a good Reddy family.
- I am looking forward to seeing friends—bald, beer-bellied, or otherwise—after 50 years.
